Some sessions are planned weeks in advance, outfits carefully chosen, timelines mapped out, everything thought through.
And then there are mornings like this, a random Monday.
No rush, No expectations, just a quiet home in Beckenham, soft light coming through the windows, and a six month old baby discovering the world in his own way. This session was a Christmas gift from dad to mum.
Not wrapped in paper, but in time. In presence. In the kind of memory that stays.
Six months old, right in the middle of everything
There’s something about this stage that feels… in between.
They’re no longer that tiny curled up newborn.
But not quite on the move either.
They look at you differently.
They recognise you.
They respond.
And you can feel it in the room.
He was curious, Calm, then suddenly full of energy. Those little attempts to stand, hands held tightly by mum and dad, like he already knew he wanted more from the world. And the smiles,
the kind that come out of nowhere and change everything for a second.
No posing, just being together
We didn’t force anything.
They sat on the floor, close to each other. At times it felt like I wasn’t even there.
Mum holding him close, pressing a soft kiss against his cheek.
Dad watching, quietly, the way parents do when they’re trying to take it all in. There were moments of stillness, and then moments of laughter that filled the whole room.
It’s always like that with in home sessions.
A rhythm that belongs to the family, not to the camera.
The beauty of staying at home
There’s a reason I always come to you for newborn and baby sessions. Your home already holds everything that matters, the sofa where you spend your evenings.
The floor where your baby is learning to sit, to move, to reach, the light that falls exactly the same way every morning.
Nothing feels unfamiliar.
Which means everyone relaxes a little faster.
And that’s where the real moments live.
A gift that becomes a memory
I kept thinking about the idea behind this session.
A Christmas gift, but not something that gets used once and forgotten.
This is the kind of gift that grows in value over time.
Right now, it’s a memory of a Monday morning.
In a few years, it will be a reminder of how small he once was.
How he looked at them.
How they looked at him.
And maybe that’s the point of all of this. To hold on to the parts that change the fastest.
Thinking about your own session?
If you’re somewhere in those early months, wondering if it’s the right time… it usually is.
You don’t need a perfect house.
Or a special occasion.
Sometimes all it takes is a quiet morning, your baby in your arms, and a little space to just be together.
