There’s a quiet shift happening in how I photograph pregnancy, and honestly, in how I see it, too.
Lately, I’ve been leaning into texture. Not just the kind you can touch, like a soft robe or a knit blanket (though those matter too), but the texture you feel in an image. The grain, the softness, the subtle imperfections that make a photograph feel more like a memory than a picture.
I’ve started adding grain intentionally to some of my maternity photos. A little softness here, a little blur there. It’s not random...it’s deliberate. Because the truth is, motherhood isn’t always sharp and clear. It’s layered. Raw. Sometimes hazy. Sometimes overwhelming and beautiful and complicated, all at once.
And I want the images I make to reflect that.
Pregnancy isn’t just about the bump.
It’s about waiting.
It’s about shifting identity.
It’s about holding hope and fear in the same breath.
It’s not always glow and sparkle (though those moments exist too). Sometimes it’s quiet, reflective, even a little messy, and that’s exactly why I find it so powerful to photograph.
When I edit these sessions now, I’m not aiming for perfect. I’m aiming for true. That dreamy, film-like feel… it adds something emotional. Something that says, “this was a moment worth remembering, even if it wasn’t polished.”
Maternity sessions, for me, have become slow portraits of feeling.
Not just form.
Not just a belly in beautiful light.
But a woman at the edge of something life-altering.
And I feel so honoured to hold space for that.
