Somehow, my last blog post was back in May. I did not mean to leave it this long, but the past few months have been full. Full of babies, growing families, beautiful bumps, tiny newborn details and homes filled with that very particular kind of chaos that comes with welcoming a new baby.
So before autumn properly begins, I wanted to come back here and share a little of what the past few months have looked like behind my camera.
A summer of growing families
One of the things I have loved most over these past few months is photographing families at so many different stages of motherhood. There have been maternity sessions with babies still safely tucked away, newborn sessions only days after their arrival, and families learning their new rhythm together.
Every session has been completely different, and I think that is exactly why I love photographing this season of life. I never want families to feel they need to perform for my camera. I would much rather photograph what is already there. The way you hold your baby, a little hand wrapped around your finger, bare feet on the bed, or a toddler who has absolutely no intention of doing what we planned.
Those are usually the moments that make the photographs feel like yours.
Maternity stories
There have been some beautiful maternity sessions too, photographing that strange little space between waiting and finally meeting your baby. Pregnancy can feel endless when you are living through it, especially towards the end, but afterwards it becomes surprisingly difficult to remember exactly what it felt like to carry them.
My maternity sessions across Beckenham, Bromley and London have taken me from quiet moments at home to beautiful outdoor evenings in the summer light. I love keeping these sessions natural and relaxed, without expecting you to suddenly know how to pose or behave differently because there is a camera in front of you.
Tiny newborn days at home
And, of course, there have been lots of newborn cuddles.
My newborn photography sessions continue to take place in families’ own homes, and it is still one of my favourite ways to photograph those first days. No rushing out of the house with a newborn, no worrying about whether your baby will sleep at exactly the right moment, and no expectation that your home needs to look perfect.
We simply find the beautiful natural light and allow the session to unfold around your baby. Sometimes they sleep. Sometimes they want to feed for half of the session. Sometimes an older sibling completely steals the show. It is all part of it.
I photograph the tiny details, but I also love stepping back and photographing the bigger picture. Your baby in your arms, everyone together on the bed, quiet feeds, little stretches and all the ordinary things that start changing much sooner than we expect.
Birth and the beginning of everything
Birth photography continues to hold a very special place in my work. There is something completely different about walking into a birth space with a camera because nothing can really be planned.
There is no directing and no repeating a moment because someone blinked. You simply pay attention.
A hand being squeezed through a contraction. Someone waiting quietly beside the bed. The change in the room when a baby finally arrives. And then suddenly there is this completely new little person who, only moments earlier, was still inside their mother.
Being trusted to photograph that is something I never take lightly. I continue to accept a very limited number of birth photography bookings across London so I can give each family the flexibility and availability that being on call requires.
From May to September...
Somewhere between all of those sessions, summer happened too. There have been busy weeks and quieter ones, galleries edited late at night, albums being prepared, homes visited across South London, babies who slept through almost everything and babies who very firmly decided that sleeping was not part of their plan.
Looking back through the photographs from May until now feels a little like watching several different stories unfold at once. Pregnancies became babies. Families grew. Tiny newborns changed almost overnight.
And now the light is starting to change again. The evenings are becoming shorter, autumn maternity sessions are beginning, and there are more babies already sitting in my calendar waiting to arrive.
So maybe this is less of an update and more of a little marker of the past few months. May to September. Pregnancies, births, newborns and families, and a lot of ordinary moments that one day probably will not feel ordinary at all.
If you are expecting a baby and looking for a maternity, birth or newborn photographer in Beckenham, Bromley or London, I am now taking bookings for autumn and the months ahead. You can get in touch through my website and tell me a little about you, your family and what you would love to remember.
Always with love,
Deborah xxx
