When I moved to Beckenham, I thought I was simply changing houses. I didn’t know that within a few months, life would quietly place people in my path that would become part of my everyday world. The kind of people that slowly become family without anyone really noticing when it happened. Somewhere between shared BBQs in the summer, birthdays, New Year celebrations, evenings spent talking and little moments outside our houses, we built our own small community here. Strong, honest, supportive...and now somehow, unbelievably, there’s a baby joining all of it.

This wasn’t a maternity session yet. That one will come later, when summer arrives properly in June and her bump is fuller and heavier and even more real somehow. This was something softer. Quieter. An announcement. A pause in time before everything changes forever. Just the two of them, surrounded by bluebells and spring light, holding this secret that isn’t really a secret anymore.

Watching them together during this session felt less like photographing clients and more like witnessing two people stepping gently into a new chapter of themselves. The way he kissed her belly. The way she looked at him when he made her laugh. The ultrasound photo resting against her dress in the flowers. The little smiles between moments. Nothing dramatic. Nothing performative. Just love.

And honestly, they are exactly the type of couple everyone hopes to have around. The couple you want at a dinner party because they make everyone feel comfortable immediately. Warm, funny, grounded, effortlessly cool without trying too hard. I already know this baby is going to be a whole vibe with parents like these. And selfishly, I think this little one is also getting a slightly crazy auntie next door ;)

Being part of this journey feels emotional in ways I didn’t really expect. Maybe because I work independently and my family lives far away. My sister lives in another country, and somewhere along the way i felt that she became the younger sister life gave me nearby. So every win feels doubled. Every milestone feels personal. And being trusted not only as their photographer, but also as their doula through this season of life… I honestly don’t even have the words for that properly.

It’s one thing to photograph beautiful moments. It’s another thing entirely to be invited into people’s real lives. To witness the before, the waiting, the excitement, the nervousness, the becoming. Sometimes I sit back after sessions like this and realise this work was never really about photography alone. It’s about connection. About community. About people finding each other at the right moment in life and somehow becoming part of each other’s stories. And I think that’s exactly what happened here.

There’s something so special about documenting the very beginning of a new chapter. The waiting, the excitement, the tiny secret becoming real. If you’re looking for a gentle and candid way to announce your pregnancy, I’d love to create something that feels personal to you. Nothing overly posed, just real moments, real connection and photographs that will bring you back to this exact feeling years from now.

Always with Love,

Deborah xxx
