Pregnancy has this magical way of stretching time. Some weeks feel endless, while others fly by in a blur. And before you know it, your bump is there, bold and beautiful, and you suddenly realise… it’s time for maternity photos.

But here’s the thing most people don’t always realise: the best time to book your maternity session is much earlier than the actual date of the photoshoot. Let me explain.

The Best Time for Maternity Photos

The sweet spot for maternity sessions is usually between 30 and 34 weeks. By then, your bump has that lovely round shape and you’re still comfortable enough to enjoy the session without feeling overly tired. Every pregnancy is different of course, but that window is where the magic usually happens.

Why You Should Book Early

Even though the photoshoot itself happens later, it’s so important to reserve your space early. I only take one session per day to make sure each family has my full attention. Between maternity sessions, newborn shoots, and birth photography, my calendar fills up quickly, especially as holidays and busy seasons approach.

Booking in advance gives you peace of mind and guarantees that your date is saved just for you. It’s a little bit of exclusivity I hold for my clients, you’ll never feel like you’re squeezed into a crowded schedule.

Choosing Your Setting: Home, Studio, or Outdoors

Maternity photos can look and feel very different depending on where you choose to have them.

In-Home Sessions: Perfect if you want a relaxed, intimate vibe. These photos feel personal, capturing you in your own space. They’re calm, cosy, and authentic.

  • Studio Sessions: My studio in Beckenham is designed for soft, timeless maternity portraits. This is where we can play with light, textures, and elegant styling that keeps the focus on you and your growing bump.
  • Outdoor Sessions: If you love nature and want something whimsical and dreamy, an outdoor shoot can be incredible. Parks and green spaces in Bromley or London create a beautiful backdrop that changes with the seasons.

Each option has its own magic, it really just depends on your personality and how you want to remember this stage of your journey.

Don’t Wait Too Long

Pregnancy is unpredictable, and sometimes babies have their own plans. Booking early means you don’t miss out on this chapter. You get to look back and see yourself in that short but powerful season where you’re carrying life.

So if you’re thinking about maternity photos, don’t wait until you’re already 30 weeks. Reach out as soon as you can, even in your second trimester, to make sure your spot is secure.

Your future self will thank you.
