Dear London Mama,
When I first arrived in this city, I had a camera, years of experience supporting women through birth, and a heart full of passion for storytelling.
But no one knew my name.
I wanted to become a birth photographer here in London, to document the kind of moments that rarely make it onto Instagram. The in-between moments. The quiet strength. The first cries. The way time folds in on itself during labour, then opens up wide the second your baby lands in your arms. But starting from scratch? That was hard.
I reached out to other photographers. Sent emails. Shared my heart. And… mostly silence.
It felt like the industry already had its people, its favourites. And there wasn’t much room for someone new, even someone with over 15 years of experience as a doula. I hoped someone might say, “Come in, there’s space for you too.” But they didn’t. So I built it anyway.
I kept showing up. I said yes when no one was watching. I poured everything into the births I was invited into, quietly building a portfolio full of truth and tenderness. Not trends. Not what sells. Just what felt real. And over time, something shifted. People started to find me. Families who wanted more than just pretty pictures. Women who didn’t just want a photographer — they wanted someone who understood birth, who could hold space, who could be present without needing to perform.
Now, when you search for birth photography in London, my name comes up.
Now, other photographers reach out to me.
And I’ll be honest — it feels good.
But what feels even better is this: That I no longer compare. That I no longer count on others to open doors for me. That I’ve built something grounded, respectful, and real.
If you’re planning a birth in London, Bromley or Beckenham, and you want someone to witness it without judgment, without pressure, just with care — I’m here.
I won’t just take your photo. I’ll see you.
If you’re not sure yet whether birth photography is for you, I get it. It’s intimate. It’s personal. But it’s also powerful. And one day, when you look back, you might be surprised how much you’ll want to remember.
So here’s my open door.
No pressure. Just an invitation.
Warmly,
Deborah xxx
